Dead BeautifulDead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This books was just plain amazing. The story line was so perfect and so different and unique. From the beginning where Renee's parents mysterious die in the woods to the twisted ending it will completely leave you hooked. An ended that I definitely did not see coming. The best part that I loved is that the author completely answered all the questions I had, she didn't leave anything out when the story started to unravel. You immediately fall in love with the characters with their great personalities.
I can't express enough that this is a must read book! This is the Yvonne Woon's first book, and boy did she do a great job. I look forward reading more books from this author.

View all my reviews After Renee Winters discovers her parents lying dead in California’s Redwood Forest in what appears to be a strange double murder, her grandfather sends her off to Gottfried Academy in Maine, a remote and mysterious high school dedicated to philosophy, “crude sciences,” and Latin: the Language of the Dead. It’s here she meets Dante, a dark and elusive student to whom she feels inexplicably drawn. As they get to know each other better, Dante can’t seem to control his attraction either, and their desires gradually deepen into a complex and dangerous romance. Dangerous because Dante is hiding a frightening secret. A secret so terrible, it has him fearing for Renee’s life. Dante’s not the only one with secrets, though. Turns out Gottfried Academy has a few of its own… Like, how come students keep disappearing? Why are the prefect-like Monitors creeping around campus during the night? And what exactly are the Headmistress and Professors really up to? Renee is determined to find out why. Dead Beautiful is both a compelling romance and thought-provoking read, bringing shocking new meaning to life, death, love, and the nature of the soul.

Review: Fat Vampire by Adam Rex

Fat Vampire
Adam Rex
Release Date: Jul 27, 2010

This book wasn't bad...but it wasn't great as well. I feel the story line wasn't that strong. It wasn't hard to put it down. I was a tad bit disappointed, liking vampires myself, and after reading reading the back and with the cover I was sure that I would like this book.
I really didn't like any of the characters. You have Doug who is the awkward comic geek, his friend Jay who is equally awkward...hiding in the bathroom for 30mins at a party... A foreign exchange student Senjal who has the Google, which is an addiction to the internet (...really) I really don't like the villain.. and really didn't like the ending. And the whole Vampire Hunter show just seemed lame. Also the ending had like a few didn't endings which I didn't entirely like. All in all, I recommend reading other books you really want to read first, before this one.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars.
Synopsis
Doug Lee is undead quite by accident - attacked by a desperate vampire, he finds himself cursed with being fat and fifteen forever. When he has no luck finding some goth chick with a vampire fetish, he resorts to sucking the blood of cows under cover of the night. But it's just not the same. Then he meets the new Indian exchange student and falls for her - hard. Yeah, he wants to bite her, but he also wants to prove himself to her. But like the laws of life, love, and high school, the laws of vampire existence are complicated - it's not as easy as studying Dracula. Especially when the star of Vampire Hunters is hot on your trail in an attempt to boost ratings.... Searing, hilarious, and always unexpected, Fat Vampire is a satirical tour de force from one of the most original writers of fiction today.

Review of Blood Engines

Blood Engines
T.A. Pratt
Pub. Date: September 2007

Blood Engines is an urban fantasy set in a world that is close to modern day but with complex magics. The main character Marla can be off putting at times, but shes also the guardian of Felport and has to have to the tough personality (though I thought that she wasn't that smart not fully helping the snake God not now making him her enemy...)
My favorite part is when Marla and B, a powerful seer, is trapped in the universe of possibilities. I find this fascinating that they were able to see the different outcomes in the world that could have happened.
All in all I give this a 4, at times I found it hard to put down, but also wish Marla was a little nicer and less selfish, because I honestly really liked the snake God.

Synopsis

Meet Marla Mason–smart, saucy, slightly wicked witch of the East Coast.…

Sorcerer Marla Mason, small-time guardian of the city of Felport, has a big problem. A rival is preparing a powerful spell that could end Marla’s life–and, even worse, wreck her city. Marla’s only chance of survival is to boost her powers with the Cornerstone, a magical artifact hidden somewhere in San Francisco. But when she arrives there, Marla finds that the quest isn’t going to be quite as cut-and-dried as she expected…and that some of the people she needs to talk to are dead. It seems that San Francisco’s top sorcerers are having troubles of their own–a mysterious assailant has the city’s magical community in a panic, and the local talent is being (gruesomely) picked off one by one.

With her partner-in-crime, Rondeau, Marla is soon racing against time through San Francisco’s alien streets, dodging poisonous frogs, murderous hummingbirds, cannibals, and a nasty vibe from the local witchery, who suspect that Marla herself may be behind the recent murders. And if Marla doesn’t figure out who is killing the city’s finest in time, she’ll be in danger of becoming a magical statistic herself.…
